SALAM Press release
We, like many around the world, were woken to the disturbing news of the massacre of 49 ( now currently 51) innocent Muslims in Christchurch New Zealand as they went about their peaceful worship. Our supplications and prayers are with the victims, their families and close ones. We pray that the Almighty embraces the victims with mercy and grants a complete recovery to the wounded, whilst healing the hearts of Muslims worldwide.
This attack is one of many ultra-right/white supremist attacks that have happened in recent times and which specifically target Muslims. Other attacks Include Alexandre Bissonnette who entered a Qubec Mosque in 2017 and shot at worshippers there killing 6 people and injuring 53. Craig Hicks who killed three Muslims in Chapel Hill. Anders Breivik who killed 77 people in Norway. And Darren Osborn who drove his vehicle through a crowd leaving a mosque in Finsbury Park.
It is clear that mosque security is a priority for the Muslim community and we would like to take this opportunity to echo the recommendations of other leading Muslim organisations in the following points, which can be taken from this horrific event and which must be internalised and pondered over:
“He who created death and life to test which of you is best in action. He is the Almighty, the Ever-Forgiving.” (67:2).
We believe that all that befalls us is from the divine wisdom and decree of the Most Wise (Al-Hakeem), and exhort each other to observe present patience, a patience that not only accepts what has been divinely pre-ordained, but is content and embodies gratitude towards Him. Allah says regarding this:
“We will test you with a certain amount of fear and hunger and loss of wealth and life and fruits. But give good news to the steadfast: Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘We belong to Allāh and to Him we will return.’ Those are the people who will have blessings and mercy from their Lord; they are the ones who are guided.” (2:155-157)
We feel that there needs to be a multi-layered approach on how to deal with this new wave of terroristic proportions and that education should be at the heart of this. At S.A.L.A.M we are at the service of the wider community in producing educational and training products to help bridge the gap between communities.
“I desire nothing but reform so far as I am able, and with none but Allah is the direction of my affair to a right issue; on Him do I rely and to Him do I turn” (Qur’an 11:88)
